DISCOS PREFERIDOS DE LA DECADA

Me sumo a hacer mi propio repaso a los últimos diez años con una lista de "Los Mejores discos de la década" para mi claro, y a día de hoy.

Llevaba tiempo configurando la lista, con la ayuda de la de discos/temas preferidos (ver aquí), pero me he resistido a publicarla hasta ahora porque mi intención era acabar las playlists mensuales, después hacer lo mejor de 2009, y a partir de aquí dar los últimos retoques a la lista de la década, que cuelgo hoy. En una lista como esta que repasa diez años, los puestos son más orientativos que rigurosos, la mayoría de bandas podían estar un poco más arriba o más abajo.

En general las publicaciones han priorizado ser los primeros en publicarla a dejar tiempo a que terminara la década (la primera si no me equivoco fue la de Pitchfork, que salió a 2 de Octubre, faltando por salir discos como los de Music Go Music, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Them Croocked Vultures, Weezer, The Ravonettes, Dead Man's Bones o Alec Ounsworth).

Todas la listas han coincidido bastante entre ellas, siendo uno de los discos más unanimamente aclamados "Kid A" de Radiohead. Aun gustándome y adorando muy especialmente "Idioteque" y "Motion Picture Soundtrack", para mí sin duda el gran disco de Radiohead de la década ha sido "In Rainbows". También me ha sorprendido que la gran mayoría de listas destaquen "This Is It" de Strokes y "Turn the bright lights" de Interpol entre los primeros puestos. Lo entiendo en cuanto a haber marcado tendencia estos años, pero no sabía que fueran a hacerlo en puestos tan altos. The Killers en cambio en el transcurso de la década han pasado casi de la revelación al ostracismo. Excepcionalmente algunos medios siguen reivindicando el debut, pero para mi su mejor disco ha sido sin duda "Sam's Town". Personalmente me parece que hay algo de castigo en ello, por haber traspasado la frontera de lo indepentiente/alternativo a lo mainstream, una lástima. Igual dentro de unos años se les reivindica, nunca se sabe. También me sorprende lo unanimamente ignorados que han sido para una mayoría amplia de las listas discos como el "Origin of Simetry" de Muse (bueno, todo Muse en general) o el debut de Kaiser Chiefs, dos discos de indudable popularidad e importancia para la década, y así como otros más modestos, pero a los que tengo especial cariño, como The Spinto Band o Peter Bjorn and John, que sin contar con discos redondos, tuvieron hits enormes. Por último reivindicaré en mi lista uno de mis trabajos preferidos de estos últimos 10 años, que a pesar de su potencial no he visto citada en ninguno de estos repasos, supongo que a causa de no haber conseguido  por el momento popularidad suficiente, debido en parte a no estar situada dentro de una tendencia de moda, ni un estilo muy concreto. Este es el "Begin to hope" de Regina Spektor, que a modo de reivindicación encabeza mi lista.

Por tal de dejar fuera el mínimo de bandas posible y que quede una lista más representativa del global de la década, incluyo un único disco por banda, el que más me ha gustado.

Se han quedado a las puertas discos interesantes como los debuts de Crystal Castles, Newton Faulkner o Serena Maneesh, así como "Milk Man" de Deerhoof, y también muchos otros representativos como "Toxicity" de System of a Down, alguno de Queens of Stone Age, The White Stripes o el debut de The Darkness entre otros, por supuesto sin hablar los que me dejo y los que aun no he tenido la oportunidad de conocer. Poner 100 videoclips de golpe sería una matada, pero como me gustaría completarlo, iré abriendo entradas con los videoclips que faltan durante las próximas semanas/meses. Lista en Spotify aquí, evidentemente faltan algunas bandas que no están, pero aun así para mi esta lista es una joya :) En algun que otro caso no estaba el álbum concreto que he puesto en la lista, pero si otros de la misma banda y década.

MATT AND KIM

Este verano vi un video de una actuación en directo de este dúo de Brooklyn que me llamó la atención por las similitudes (a la inversa) con The Dresden Dolls, cada cual en su estilo. Matt and Kim no comparten la imagen entre gótica y cabaretera de Dresden Dolls, pero si que tienen algo en la forma de tocar en directo que recuerda bastante a esta, algo relacionado con la energía tocando, que no tanto con el estilo de música en sí. A parte de que lógicamente, parte del parecido viene de que ambas bandas están compuestas por un dúo chico-chica de un cantante-teclista y un batería, solo que en este caso el cantante-teclista es el chico.

A 3 meses y medio de acabar la década, esta claro que una de las corrientes de estos últimos 10 años, a parte del boom de cantante solista indie femenina, ha sido la de la "normalización" de este tipo de grupos compuestos solamente de un dúo chico-chica, en el que uno toca la batería, y el otro canta y toca algún instrumento. Desde luego no es un inventó de esta década, pero si que en esta se ha popularizado lo suficiente como para que mientras que la propuesta de White Stripes, Dresden Dolls o Mates of State chocaban en su momento, la de Ting Tings o estos Matt and Kim ya no sorprenden tanto, al situarlos dentro de una tendencia contemporánea existente.

Sus música se puede situar dentro del pop indie de canciones sencillas y alegres de buen rollo, y aunque no sea el mismo estilo, el tipo de melodías y forma de cantar tienen bastante de aquellas bandas de "punk" rock juvenil tipo Blink 182. De momento han publicado dos discos: Matt and Kim de 2006, y Grand de este mismo año.

2. JASON MOLINA “Let me go, let me go, let me go” (2006)
Disco de guitarra acústica y voz, sin más, pero con muy buenos resultados. Los temas tienen aire melancólico y continuos altibajos de intensidad, en la línea de canciones tipo “Exit music (for a film)” de Radiohead, o “Forever blue” de Chris Isaak. De estos discos recomendados para momentos de relax.


3. CYMBALS EAT GUITARS “Why there are mountains” (2009)
Interesante banda de Nueva York con ciertos aires al indie-rock noventero de Pavement.

5. TEA LEAF GREEN “Taught to be proud” (2005)
Banda de rock adulto a lo Wilco por decirlo de algún modo. No los conocía y me interesé por ellos tras escuchar el tema John Brown, que me parece realmente bueno.





6. REGINA SPEKTOR (Singles) (2004-2009)
Gracias a Spotify he podido escuchar singles de diferentes bandas de las que más me gustan, en los cuales suelen venir canciones inéditas, algunas más normales, pero otras realmente buenas que da gusto descubrir, como la canción “Musicbox”.

8. THE DRESDEN DOLLS “No Virgina – Special Edition” (2008)
El año pasado The Dresden Dolls sacaron este disco de “descartes” de su anterior “Yes Virginia” (2006), que vaya descartes, canciones como “The Mouse and the model” o “Sorry bunch” para mi se encuentran entre lo mejor de su repertorio. En cualquier caso este es un disco que ya escuché bastante el año pasado, lo que, de nuevo con Spotify, he descubierto esta edición especial en la que aun hay 3 temas más inéditos, de los cuales “A night at the roses”, de solo voz y guitarra eléctrica, de aire muy casero (y sin piano) me parece super emocional.

9. THE GO! TEAM (Singles) (2004-2007)
De nuevo descubriendo singles con spotify, que esconden temas inéditos tan buenos como “Willows song” o “Milk crisis”.

11. ELBOW “The Seldom seen kid” (2008)
Los comenté a raíz de su concierto del Fib, pop-rock experimental que “en algunas formas y armonías me recordaban a bandas del tipo Sigur Ros, e incluso un poco a rock progresivo en su vertiente más melódica, tipo Marillion. Aunque no sean comparaciones muy acertadas, si que en algunos momentos tenían cierta de esa épica y espectacularidad sonora”.

12. DELOREAN “Ayrton senna” (2009)
También los comenté recientemente por su concierto en el Fib. Grupo que ha conseguido que sus canciones tengan un estilo propio muy marcado.







13. BRITISH SEA POWER “Man of Aran” (2009)
Curiosa banda, he estado escuchando sus 2 últimos discos. En el penúltimo, “do you like rock music?” tenían ciertas semejanzas con Arcade Fire (no tan buenos, pero en cuanto a estilo), y en cambio el último, "Man of Aran", esta formado prácticamente en su totalidad, por canciones instrumentales algo más experimentales.

14. FRIENDLY FIRES “Friendly Fires” (2008)
También los comenté a raíz de su actuación en el Fib, suenan a “una especie de evolución de Digitalism en su vertiente de canciones menos electrónicas, o mejor dicho, más de estribillos (Pogo, etc), indie electrónico de baile, fresco y con atmósfera”.

RASPUTINA – Oh Perilous World

Últimamente ando enganchado a este disco, que me ha sorprendido bastante debido a un estilo que suena a cruce entre la Electric Light Orchestra de “El Dorado” (por sus composiciones clásicas, y la incorporación de chelos a este tipo de música), y a los Dresden Dolls del debút (supongo que por este tipo de rock alternativo sin guitarras, que sin ser realmente gótico, tienen algo de oscuro), pero aunque por alguna estraña razón ni me sonaban, en realidad llevan en activo desde mediados de los 90. Todavía tengo el disco en fase de escucha, pero “Cage in a cave” me parece un tema grandioso.


La banda de Brooklyn está liderada por la cantante y chelista Melora Creager, que tiene una biografía envidiable para los que somos amantes de el rock de los 90: Empezó tocando en una banda llamada Ultra Vivid Scene, con la cual telonearon entre otros a Pixies, Belly y Throwing Muses. Además, Nirvana la contrataron para tocar el chello en la gira de In Utero.También ha tocado con Belle & Sebastián, aunque en la información que he encontrado no queda claro si como chelista, o de telonera…


Rasputina obtuvieron cierta repercusión tras su debút “Thanks for the Ether” (1996) gracias a actuar con bandas como Porno for Pyros, y principalmente con Marilyn Manson, en su etapa más creativa y cuando su propuesta aun era creible. De hecho, el siguiente lanzamiento de Rasputina, el ep Transylvanian Regurgitations (1997), tuvo la colaboración de Manson que añadió teclados, y de Twiggy Ramirez, que añadió guitarras y bajos. El resto de miembros de Rasputina han ido cambiando a lo largo del tiempo, aunque manteniendo la idea de banda formada (más o menos) exclusivamente por contrabajistas femeninas, un batería masculino, y la voz de Melora. Entre los muchos músicos que han pasado por Rasputina destacaré a Zoe Keating, miembro de Rasputina de 2002 a 2006, por haber tocado también recientemente con The Dresden Dolls y Amanda Palmer en directo, siendo uno de los músicos del disco debut de Amanda Palmer “Who killed Amanda Palmer” (2008), y a Chris Vrenna en el 2º disco “How we quit the forest” (1998), como batería y productor.


Chris Vrenna es un mercenario de la música que comenzó como batería de Nine Inch Nails desde sus inicios hasta el “The Downward Spiral”(1994), este incluido, más exactamente, de 1989 a 1997. Ha producido, remezclado y hecho de ingeniero para bandas como Smashing Pumpkins, U2, Rammstein, Weezer, Metallica, David Bowie, Hole, Marilyn Manson, Rob Zombie, Green Day o Dir en grey entre otros. Aparte de trabajar en bandas sonoras de videojuegos como Doom3, Quake4, Sonic the headgehog o Need for Speed most wanted, e incluso fue uno de los músicos que se barajaron para los nuevos Guns’n Roses de Axel. Actualmente toca el teclado en Marilyn Manson (tras haber sido durante un tiempo el batería).
